Thanksgiving - Trying to Mix Family and Students Together!

We made turkey for Thanksgiving for both my family (15 of us including David and me, my son and grandson (!!! First holiday with this 5-year-old grandson! And first holiday in a long time with my son!), Dad and step-mom, step-sister and brother and their families.) and then for students! And we had one former student travel from where she lives in California now to share the holiday with us!

I had lots of help preparing rolls, and pies, and all the family traditions... (Spinach Dip and Bread Bowl, Chocolate Chip Pie... But we didn't get the Hot Toddy Sauce made.)

We enjoyed watching "How to Train Your Dragon" at the end of the day and some of us started putting a puzzle together!

San Francisco!

The nut tree at the Nut Tree!!!

We enjoyed a seafood dinner the first  night after stopping at the Outlets in Vacaville and letting the girls exercise their shopping genes...

Saturday morning after breakfast at the Blue Mermaid Chowder House and Bar we traveled across the Golden Gate Bridge and then down on the beach looking back at it. Then came Golden Gate Park followed by lunch at Japantown. It was dark by then so it was my first trip down Lombard St. after dark! We finished up on Pier 39 and headed back about 8...

We pray that these relationships will grow deep enough that our friendship will be strong enough that they will continue to remain in touch with us as they go through the ups and downs of their lives.

Darkness/Light...

I first felt deep physical darkness in a cave outside of Ely when I was just a girl.  Recently, when I took some of the Girls House ladies on a tour of a mine in Virginia City, we were plunged into darkness when the guide showed us how miners worked by candlelight in the mine, and then blew out the candle...  We couldn't see even our hands directly in front of our faces...

The Bible indicates that people live in spiritual darkness...
             And that God is light, and shines light into men's lives...

So this led me to search for what the Bible says about light and darkness...

Daniel 2:22: "...He reveals deep and hidden things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
and the light dwells with Him."

1 John 1:5:  "...God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."

Isaiah 9:2:  " The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone."

John 3:19-21:  "And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

John 12:46:  "I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness."

John 8:12:  "Again Jesus spoke to them, saying,'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.' "

Ephesians 5:8: "...for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord."

Our use of electricity worldwide shows that people prefer to live in light, physically, rather than darkness - who wants to stumble and stub a toe in the darkness?  (Who lives where electricity is available, but chooses to use candles instead? And we even pay for it...)

It's my prayer that you will seek spiritual light in your life from the Giver of Light...

House Girls to Virginia City/Tahoe!

I heartily enjoyed our Girls'House weekend! Seven of us went to Virginia City. We dropped one girl back in Reno and six of us went to the Lake and spent the night in a grand hotel. We stopped at the Rocks on the way to the hotel.  The cook at the restaurant turned dinner into a show, throwing bowls and juggling knives...

We had a great time!

While we were there we went on a mine tour...
Into a mine...

We were plunged into deep darkness when the guide showed us how miners worked by candlelight in the mine, and then blew out the candle...
We couldn't see even our hands directly in front of our faces...
This got me thinking about Darkness and Light
